Problems connecting to the Aligner License Server

Postby Peter Richterich » Tue Aug 26, 2008 4:53 pm

This post describes the most common causes for problems connecting to the Aligner License Server, and gives step-by-step instructions about how to solve such problems.

Common causes:
  • The License Server computer is not running (or sleeping/hibernating).
  • The Aligner License Server program (or service) is not running.
  • Connections to the License Server are blocked by a firewall program.
  • The License Server computer is on a different network (or subnet).

Step-by-step instructions:
  1. Verify that the License Server computer and program are running.
If you can just walk to the computer where the Aligner License Server is installed, try starting CodonCode Aligner on the same computer, and checking out a license.
    • If you can get a License, proceed to step 2.
    • If you cannot get a license, you need to start the Aligner License Server program (or, on Windows, start or re-start the Aligner License Server Service, it you are using the service). Then, try again.
    • Either way, make sure to quit CodonCode Aligner again!
  2. Try checking out a license from a different computer on the same subnet (typically, a computer close to the License Server computer).
    • If you can get a License, proceed to step 3.
    • If you cannot get a license, but you were able to get a license on the same computer (in step 1), this is probably a firewall problem. The Windows firewall or a third-party firewall is preventing the Aligner License Server program to receive the license requests. Please check https://www.codoncode.net/viewtopic.php?t=7 (for Windows) or https://www.codoncode.net/viewtopic.php?t=8 (for Mac OS X).
  3. If you got here, you have been able to get a license from some computers, but not from a computer that you want to use CodonCode Aligner on. This can happen if your computer is not connected to the same network as the License Server computer.
First, make sure that your computer is connected to the network. If it is, try entering the IP address of the License Server computer in the dialog that appears when CodonCode Aligner cannot automatically detect the License Server.
If you still have problems, please contact us by email. Please include a description of what you have done. If at all possible, also include the entire "Logs" folders from (a) the "Aligner License Server" folder on the License Server computer, and from (b) the "CodonCode Aligner" folder on the computer where you have problems connecting to the License Server. It can also be helpful if you include the IP addresses of both computers, and screen shots of error dialogs.
