Changing memory on OS X 10.6

On OS X 10.6 (Leopard), setting the memory for CodonCode Aligner through the "Memory" preferences does not work. This problem was fixed in CodonCode Aligner 3.5.1, and was released in December 2009. Version 3.5.1 will be a free upgrade to all customers who are using CodonCode Aligner version 3.0.

If you are using an older version of CodonCode Aligner, or need to change the memory before the release of version 3.5.1, please follow these instructions:

1. Quit CodonCode Aligner (if the program is running).
2. Open a Finder window for the "CodonCode Aligner" folder (usually in /Applications).
3. Right-click (or control-click) on the "CodonCode Aligner" application icon in this folder.
4. Choose "Show Package Contents" from the popup menu. This will open a new window.
5. Double-click on the "Contents" folder to open it.
6. Double-click on the file "Info.plist" (you may not see the .plist extension). If you have the Developer Tools installed, the file will open in the Property List Editor program; if not, you can edit it using the TextEdit program.
7. Locate a line that contains the text

   Code: Select all

   -Xms32m -Xmx256M

   Change the second value to the desired amount of memory, for example to

   Code: Select all

   -Xms32m -Xmx512M

   The number you enter must be less than the amount of RAM in your computer; on 32-bit computers, it also must be less than 1400.
8. Save the changes.
9. Start CodonCode Aligner. If the program does not start, you may need to reduce the amount of memory you assigned.

If you cannot save the changes to the Info.plist file, you may need to change the permissions first so that you have write permissions; you may need an "Admin" account to do this.
