How to take screen shots

Postby Brian Campbell » Wed Jul 22, 2009 3:51 pm

When you encounter a problem with CodonCode Aligner, we ask that you always send us screen shots of any error or message dialogs.

Here are a few ways that you can take screen shots and save them as files:

Taking screenshots on Mac OS X:
  1. Press Command-Shift-3 to take a screen shot of your entire screen. This will save the image as a file called "Picture 1" or similar on your desktop.
  2. To take a screen shot of a chosen area, press Command-Shift-4, then select the area you want to capture with the mouse. This will save an image of the selected area as a file called "Picture 1" or similar on your desktop.

Taking screenshots on Windows:
  1. Press the "PrtScn" or "PrintScreen" key to take a screen shot of the entire screen. The screen shot will copied be onto the clipboard, and you may be able to paste it directly into an email. Otherwise, create a file as described in the next step.
  2. To create a file with the screen shot, open an image editing program like Microsoft Paint (Microsoft Word will also work). Go to the "Edit" menu and choose "Paste". After the image appears, go to the "File" menu and choose "Save As". Save this file to a location of your choosing.
  3. To take a screen shot of just the active window, keep the "Alt" key pressed while pressing the "PrtScn" or "PrintScreen" key on your keyboard. This will copy the screen shot of the active window to the clipboard; to save it to a file, follow the steps above.

Once you have the image in a file, attach it to your email with a detailed description of your problem and send it to support (at) codoncode.com.
