To request an "extended" license key from the Aligner License Server, you first need to configure the license key server to allow "overnight" and/or "travel" keys.

To configure the License Server to allow overnight and/or travel keys:
  • Click on the "Settings" tab in the License Server (if you are running the License Server as a service on Windows, first stop the service, then start the interactive version of the License Server)
  • Select the "Checkout Policy" option from the list at the left
  • Make your desired changes for "overnight" and "travel" keys (we suggest that you require a password for extended keys)
  • Click the "Apply" button

Now you can request either an "overnight" or "travel" key for your notebook:
  • Start CodonCode Aligner
  • Aligner will get a key from the server (if one is available; if not, you will not be able to get an extended key)
  • Go to the "Help" menu, and select "License..."
  • Click on the "Extend License" button.
  • Select the desired key type and duration

You can check out travel keys for up to a maximum of 90 days, if (a) the License Server is configured for such long checkouts, and (b) the License Server can verify your system time through network time (NTP) checks. If a firewall or your local network configuration prevents network time checks, then travel keys will be limited to 7 days.

Keep in mind that extended keys prevent other users from using the same license. Therefore, you should check out licenses only for as long as you need them.

Is it possible to return a travel license manually? E.g. if I have a travel license for 3 days but would like to return it to the license server after 2 days.

Yes, this it is possible to return a travel license manually. Do do so, you need to be connected to the same network as the one your Aligner License Server is on, and the Aligner License Server has to be running. Then you simply quit CodonCode Aligner, and you will see a dialog that ask you if you want to return your travel license. If you choose to return your license, then it will be returned to the License Server.
